On Feb. 16, 2018, the UT Center for the Study of War and Society hosted an event entitled “Remembering 1918: A Hundred Years Since World War I and the Restoration of Lithuanian Independence”. Prof. Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius (UT History Dept., and Director, Center for the Study of War and Society) spoke about how “total war” reshaped world politics. In his presentation, Liulevicius discussed how the First World War proved the crucial context for the independence of Lithuania and the other Baltic states of Latvia and Estonia. There followed a panel discussion on the meaning of these events for the present day. Panelists included Audris Mockus, the Ericsson-Harlan D. Mills Chair Professor of Digital Archeology and Evidence Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Jolita Zabarauskaite-Rosenow, former advisor and assistant to the deputy speaker of the Lithuanian parliament.
