Recent Successes by Two Graduate Students Active in Programs of the Center for the Study of War and Society

We write to share good news about successes by our graduate students.
Josh Sander, doctoral student in German history, has just learned that he has been awarded a spot in the German Historical Institute’s Summer Seminar in Germany. This summer program will take students to archives in Speyer, Cologne, Koblenz, and Munich, provide training in reading old German script, and familiarize them with finding aids and reference tools. The German Historical Institute in Washington D.C. is an internationally famed center for advanced study in German and European history. Josh’s dissertation project examines Nazi plans for the occupied Netherlands in World War II.
In addition, Mike McConnell (doctoral student, German history) has just received an invitation to present at an upcoming conference at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, May 12-14, 2014. Organized by the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies and the International Tracing Service office in Bad Arolsen, Germany, this conference, the first of its kind, brings together an international body of scholars who have worked with sources housed in the ITS collections. While researching in Holocaust Museum archives for his dissertation, Mike worked with the new and innovative digital ITS collections in order to learn more about the fates of German civilians and foreign workers arrested by the Nazi security forces. His presentation at the conference will detail their experiences and examine the German prison system during one of its most destructive and chaotic phases in order to pose larger questions regarding Nazi policies and practices of social control.
