William “Bill” Herbert Baugh (Feb. 9, 1919 – Sept. 13, 1944) was born in Jackson, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Liberal Arts in 1938-1939. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Seaman 2nd Class onboard the Destroyer, USS Warrington. The USS Warrington largely participated in the Pacific Theater, contributing directly to the Solomon Island campaign in 1943 and the Hollandia campaign in 1944. He returned to New York Naval Shipyard in July 1944 for repairs. After completing repairs, the USS Warrington was released back to the Pacific Theater in September 1944. In route to the Panama Canal, the USS Warrington collided with what is now known as the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944. The crew was forced to abandon the ship during the storm on September 13th as sea water swamped the ship and caused it to sink. S 2/C Baugh was among the 248 crewmembers of the USS Warrington that were lost during the storm. His body was later recovered and he is buried at Draper Memorial Cemetery in Jackson County, Tennessee.
