Wilfred Theragood Chandler (Dec. 20, 1909 – July 7, 1944) was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was a graduate of Knoxville High School, participating in their ROTC program as a student. He attended the University of Tennessee for Business Administration in the academic year of 1931-1932 before leaving to go into his family business at Chandler Printing Company. He served in the National Guard before the outbreak of the war, and this experience pushed him to be commissioned as a Captain in 1942. Cpt. Chandler was assigned as a commanding officer of 1st Battalion in the 117th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division “Old Hickory” sent to the European Theater. Cpt. Chandler fought in the Normandy Invasion, landing on Omaha Beach with the 30th Infantry on June 15, 1944. He was killed in action as the 30th Infantry advanced against the Germans in Northern France during their fight to cross the Vire River on July 7, 1944. Cpt. Wilfred T. Chandler is buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
