Wesley Hughes Baker (Sept. 29, 1924 – July 21, 1944) was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Education in 1943 and was in his first year when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War 2. He served as a Private First Class in Company K of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment assigned to the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. PFC Baker was killed in action on July 21, 1944 during the Invasion of Guam. The 1st Provisional Marines were part of the first wave of landings on south side of the island at Agat on the first day of the invasion. They met heavy Japanese resistance when landing, some of the most intense of the US landings on the island. It was in this fighting that PFC Baker was killed in action. He is buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
