Samuel Eugene Cantrell (June 3, 1920 – Aug. 16, 1944) was born in McMinn County, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Engineering before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant and B-17 navigator in the 412 Bomb Squadron of the 95th Bomb Group flying heavy bombing operations in the European Theater. 2nd Lt. S. Eugene Cantrell was killed in action on August 16th, 1944 during a mission over Zeitz, Germany. When over the target, his B-17 was directly hit by German anti-aircraft flak and knocked out of the #3 engine. The plane left formation and is reported to may have made contact with another plane before breaking apart mid-air. 2nd Lt. S. Eugene Cantrell is buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery in Lorraine, France.
