Robert Donnell Gwin Jr. (1919 – June 29, 1943) was born in Carroll County, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Liberal Arts in 1937-1938. He enlisted in the United States Army at the start of the war. After training with armor at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Gwin was commissioned as a captain in command of Company I of the 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division. After being deployed to the European Theater in 1943, Captain Gwin saw notable success during the Battle for Hill 609 (Djebel Tahent) in North Africa from April 27 to May 1. On May 1st, he planned and conducted a sweeping flank on the German position on the hill from the northwest that resulted in surrounding and defeating their enemy forces. Captain Gwin’s achievements during the North Africa campaign resulted in him being awarded the Silver Star. He died from a non-battle affliction on June 29, 1943, while in North Africa. Captain Robert D. Gwin Jr. is buried at the North African American Cemetery in Tunis, Tunisia.
