Ray Gilbreath (Sept. 1, 1921 – March 6, 1944) was born in Anderson County, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Engineering from 1939 to 1940. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was trained as a 2nd Lieutenant and Co-Pilot flying B-24s. He was deployed to Europe and flew with the 733rd Bomb Squadron, 453rd Bomb Group, out of England. He was killed on March 24, 1944, when his plane was shot down by enemy aircraft and crashed near Plantluenne and Oldenburg, Germany, not far from the Dutch Border. 2nd Lt. Ray Gilbreath is memorialized at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Limburg, Netherlands, and Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Anderson County, Tennessee.
