Newton Alexander Cannon (Nov. 10, 1914 – March 31, 1945) was born in Dickson County, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee’s Graduate School in Medicine in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Medical Corps as a medical officer in the rank of Captain. Cpt. Cannon was deployed with the 128th Infantry Regiment in the 32nd Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater and served on the front with them during the retaking of the Philippines in 1945. While fighting on Luzon, Cpt. Cannon was killed in action during back and forth assaults between the Japanese and US forces on the Villa Verde Trail, some of the fiercest fighting during the invasion of the Philippines. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for going beyond the duties of a medical officer during the battle on the trail. Cpt. Newton A. Cannon is buried at Union Cemetery in Dickson County, Tennessee.
