Michael Coltharp Callahan (Feb. 24, 1918 – April 7, 1945) was born in Madisonville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1942 for Engineering before entering active duty with the United States Army. Callahan was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant and platoon commander in the 378th Combat Engineering Battalion. He was deployed to the European Theater in 1943, participating in the North African Campaign. Before being sent to France in 1944, 1st Lt. Callahan and the 378th was reorganized. He fought in Southern France and in Germany with the 2826th Engineer Battalion, 26th Engineer Combat Group in 1944 and 1945. He was killed in action during the Battle for Heilbronn, Germany on April 7, 1943 when his unit came under German small arms fire while constructing a bailey bridge. He is buried at Madisonville Cemetery in Madisonville, Tennessee.
