Dr. Judge William Fuller (Fed. 13, 1915 – Jan. 6, 1944) was born in Blackwood, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Tennessee’s College of Liberal Arts in 1938 before attending Tulane University’s College of Medicine for medical school. Dr. Fuller graduated in the spring of 1942 and immediately enlisted in the United States Armed Forces to volunteer his medical training. He served in the United States Navy, conducting his internship at Jacksonville Naval Hospital in Florida. After serving a short tenure at Camp Peary, Virginia, he was assigned as a Lieutenant (jg) and medical officer on the USS St. Augustine, a gunboat used to escort convoys along the East Coast and the Caribbean. Lt. Fuller was killed on January 6, 1944, along with 114 other crew members when it was accidentally rammed by the merchant ship Camas Meadows off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey. He is buried at Highland Cemetery in Norton, Virginia.
