Joseph Leslie Combs Jr (Dec. 17, 1923 – April 18, 1945) was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee. HE attended the University of Tennessee for Engineering from 1941 until he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and trained as a pilot on C-47s. 2nd Lt. Combs was deployed to the European Theater with the 12th Air Force as part of the 35th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 64th Troop Carrier Group. The 35th largely operated in the Mediterranean, participating in both the North African and the Sicily-Italy campaigns. 2nd Lt. Joseph L. Combs died non-battle, but in active duty on April 18, 1945, while based at Rosignano Air Field in Italy. He is buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, Tennessee.
