Joseph Edwin Carpenter (Aug. 16, 1915 – Jan. 13, 1945) was from Hancock County, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee for Agriculture in 1938. He enlisted in the United States army and was trained as glider infantry officer. 1st Lt. Carpenter was placed as a commanding officer of Company B in the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment attached to the 101st Airborne Division. He fought with the 101st Airborne in the European Theater through the invasion of Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge and had earned a Silver Star by 1945. 1st Lt. Joe E. Carpenter was killed in action in Bastogne, Belgium on January 13th, 1945 towards the end of the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried at Susong Family Cemetery in Bridgeport, Tennessee.
