John Thomas Edwards (Jan. 4, 1923 – August 26, 1944) was born in Weakley County, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee’s Junior College at Martin from 1941 to 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained to fly B-24 Liberators at Columbus Army Air Force base in Mississippi. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and deployed to the 15th Air Force operating out of Cerignolia, Italy. The 15th Air Force were tasked with bombing the oil fields in Ploesti, Romania in August of 1944. 2nd Lt Edwards was killed in action on August 26th when his B-24 was shot down over Yugoslavia by enemy fighters while returning from one of these missions. He is memorialized on the Weakley County Memorial in Dresden, TN and at the Hopewell Cemetery also in Weakley County, Tennessee.
