John Richard Hatfield (Dec. 11, 1904 – Oct. 22, 1942) was born in Nebraska. He attended the University of Tennessee for Liberal Arts in the Class of 1933 and UT’s Medical School in the Class of 1939. As a physician, he was granted the rank of Major and served with the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He was in service on board a ship when he died from a heart attack on October 22, 1942. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, Florida.
