James Elam Cato (May 24, 1923 – June 30, 1944) was born in Smith, Tennessee. He studied at the University of Tennessee in Agriculture from 1942 to 1943, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a corporal fighting in the Pacific Theater. Cpl. Cato was killed in action fighting the Japanese in Burma on June 30, 1944. He is buried at Hartsville Cemetery in Hartsville, Tennessee.
