James Anderson Hooper (Nov. 12, 1917 – Feb. 10, 1943) was born in McNairy County, Tennessee, and lived in Hardeman County, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Agriculture from 1939 to 1941 and was in his third year of college when he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was trained as a pilot in Valdosta, Georgia, and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant assigned to the 2nd Ferrying Group, responsible for transporting troops and supplies across the United States for the war effort. He was killed on February 10, 1943, when his plane crashed during a transport mission outside of China Grove, North Carolina. He is buried at Rainey Cemetery in Hardeman County, Tennessee.
