Horace Franklin Butler (Jan. 1, 1917 – Nov. 29, 1943) was born in Martin, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1938 with a degree in Agriculture. He enlisted in the United States Army in February 1941, and this early service allowed him to rapidly advance to the rank of Captain by the time the war began at the end of the year in December. He served as an officer in the 116th Engineer Combat Battalion. Cpt. Butler was killed in the line of duty during the Tennessee Maneuver exercises meant to simulate battlefield actions when he was involved in an accident with military vehicles between Murfreesboro and Nashville, Tennessee. He is buried at East Side Cemetery in Martin, Tennessee.
