Herman Otho Gilstrap (June 3, 1923 – Aug. 28, 1944) was born in Chickamauga, Georgia. He attended the University of Tennessee for Agriculture from 1942 to 1943 and worked as an employee at UT’s dairy farm before enlisting in the United States Army. Gilstrap was deployed as a Private First Class in the 141st Regiment in the 36th Infantry Division to France in 1944. PFC Herman O. Gilstrap was killed in action at Montelimar, France, on Aug. 28, 1944, when the 141st, confronted head-on by the 111th German Panzer Division, held their position on Hill 300 while enduring some of the heaviest fighting of the war. He is memorialized at the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial in Draguignan, France, and on the 141st Regiment Monument at Battery Park, New York City.
