Herbert Louis Davis (Nov. 27, 1917 – Feb. 20, 1944) was from Knoxville, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee Law School and graduated with an exemplary record in 1939. He practiced law in Knoxville before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He graduated the second highest in his class at Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. Davis was serving under the rank of Captain when he was involved with the U.S. invasion of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific at the beginning of 1944. He was leading a charge against a Japanese position on the island of Eniwetok when he was killed in action. He is buried at New Jewish Cemetery in Knoxville, TN, and is remembered by the University of Tennessee’s Herbert L. Memorial Trust.
