Harry Elsworth Haney (Aug. 14, 1917 – July 1, 1942) was born in Calloway County, Kentucky. He attended the University of Tennessee’s Junior College in Martin, Tennessee, from 1935 to 1936 before transferring and graduating from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October 1941 and was already training as an air cadet and pilot before the United States joined the war after Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant upon completing his training, Lt. Haney served as a pilot in the 62nd Transport Group out of Kellogg Field, Michigan. He was killed on July 1, 1942, when his plane crashed as a result of a catastrophic malfunction near Welch, West Virginia. All 21 military personnel being ferried on the plane were killed as a result. He is memorialized on the Weakley County War Memorial in Dresden, Tennessee, and the Livingston County Veterans Memorials in Kentucky
