He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in May 1941 before the United States joined the war. He was stationed in the Philippines with the 803rd Engineer Battalion as a Private First Class when the Japanese began their invasion in December 1941. PFC Andrews stayed behind while the Army Air Corps worked on evacuating the Philippines. He helped keep the air fields repaired after Japanese bombing runs and in the face of the Japanese land invasion of the islands.
