George William Denman (May 7, 1922 – March 30, 1945) was born in Polk County, Tennessee. He was an alumnus of Copper Hill High School and a student at the University of Tennessee, where he studied Engineering from 1940 to 1943. After UT, Denman enlisted as part of the Army Air Corps and was trained as a navigation officer on board B-17 Flying Fortresses. In 1944, Lieutenant Denman was deployed to the European Theatre and operated out of Debach, England, in the 861 Bomber Squadron, 493rd Group of the 8th Air Force. He was declared killed in action after his B-17 was shot down outside of Hamburg, Germany, while performing a bombing mission on the city. He is memorialized on the Table of the Missing at the American Cemetery in Margarten, Netherlands, and at Crestlawn Cemetery in Polk County, Tennessee.
