George Walmsley Frederick (Nov. 29, 1920 – March 4, 1943) was born in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended the University of Tennessee for Business Administration from 1939 to 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 368th Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. Stationed out of Thurleigh, England, 2nd Lt. Frederick served as a bombardier on a B-17 flight crew. The 368th Bomb Squadron had just participated in the first bombing raid on the German mainland in January 1943, hitting U-Boat yards in Wilhelmshaven, when 2nd Lt. Frederick was killed in action. On March 4, 1943, the 368th was sent on a mission targeting Hamm, Germany when they were attacked by German fighters over the island of Texel, Netherlands while in route to their target.2nd Lt. Frederick’s B-17 was shot down off the coast of Holland with all of the 9 crewmembers lost in the North Sea. 2nd Lt. George Frederick is memorialized at Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Limburg, Netherlands.
