Fred Clarence Ford Jr. (Aug. 25, 1919 – Nov. 26, 1944) was born in Knoxville, TN. He attended Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee for Business Administration from 1937-1938. Ford was originally a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in February 1941 before the start of the war. When the United States joined the war at the end of the year, Ford moved to the Army Air Force. There, he served as a 1st LT in the 377th Fighter Squadron of the 362nd Fighter Group. The 362nd flew P-47 Fighters and saw action in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. 1st Lt. Ford was killed in action on Nov. 26, 1944 when his plane was shot down during a reconnaissance mission over the Saarbrucken, Germany. He is memorialized at Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville, TN.
