Francis Peter “Frank” Hubbuch (June 19, 1922 – Oct. 24, 1944) was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was an engineering student at the University of Tennessee from 1940 to 1942 until he entered service in the United States Navy in September 1942. He served as an ensign that flew as a F6F-5 Hellcat pilot with Air Group 19, Fighting Squadron on board the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Ensign Hubbuch was killed action during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 24, 1944. He was reported missing in action after intense aerial combat between the USS Lexington and the Japanese carriers Zuikaku, Zuiho, Chitose, and Chiyoda as the US 3rd Fleet pursued the Japanese battleship Yamato. He is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila, Philippines and at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hamilton County, Tennessee.
