Edward Conley Grooms (Sept. 23, 1919 – Aug. 16, 1944) was born in Sevier County, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Business Administration from 1939 to 1940 after transferring from Wake Forest College. He was an employee of TVA when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the start of the war. He was trained as a 1st Lieutenant flying B-24 Liberators. 1st. Lt. Grooms was killed on August 16, 1944, when his plane was shot down over the North Sea by a malfunctioning top turret gun on another B-24 while on a practice mission. He had previously survived another crash in the North Sea in May 1944 after participating in a bombing raid inside of Germany. He is memorialized at Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
