Dale Powell Cleveland (Aug. 25, 1917 – Sept. 9, 1943) was from Hood County, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1938 before coming to the University of Tennessee for a Master’s Degree in Agriculture. He graduated from UT in 1939 and taught as a professor of agriculture at Berry College in Georgia before the start of the war in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942, was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant, and trained as a combat engineer in the 1st Engineer Special Brigade of the 531st Engineer Shore Regiment that specialized in engineering operations for amphibious landings. 1st Lt. Cleveland participated in the invasion landings of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy in 1943. He was killed in action on September 9, 1943, during the first landings of Operation Avalanche, the Allied forces’ operation to take Salerno, Italy. The 531st Engineer Regiment was tasked with landing and supporting the 141st Infantry on the beaches outside of the town of Paestrum and was met with a heavily mined beachfront and enemy resistance. 1st Lt. Dale P. Cleveland is buried at Acton Cemetery in Acton, Texas.
