Clarence Alfred Clyborne Jr. (March 16, 1919 – Dec. 31, 1943) was born in Richmond, Virginia. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Class of 1937 before attending the University of Tennessee for a Master’s in Business Administration from 1939 to 1940. As a 2nd Lieutenant, Clyborne served as a bombardier on a B-24J bomber, number 42-73222, with the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Squadron. The aircraft, nicknamed “Bugs Bunny,” and its crew were on a bombing mission to Insein, Burma [Myanmar], when the aircraft sustained damage from enemy anti-aircraft and fighter planes. The plane caught fire, and Clyborne managed to bail out. He sustained injuries upon landing and died in Japanese captivity on December 31, 1943. He is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines.
