Charles Herbert Henderson Jr. (Nov. 6, 1918 – June 12, 1944) was born in Mascot in Knox County, Tennessee. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in Pre-Med in 1938 before completing his medical license at the University of Virginia. He volunteered in the Navy’s Medical Corps as a Lieutenant (jg) and doctor. LT. Henderson was killed in action off the coast of Normandy during the invasion of Normandy following D-Day. He served as one of three doctors on board an LST that was converted into a medical facility used to transport wounded from the American landings back to England. It was struck by German bombing in the English Channel and Lt. Henderson drowned in the sinking of the LST. He is buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, TN.
