Charles Douglas Johnston Jr. (Nov. 25, 1894 – Sept. 26, 1918) was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was an alumni of Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN and the University of Tennessee. He joined the University of Tennessee Ambulance Service in 1917. Soon after, he enlisted in the Army as the United States entered World War I. He joined the Army Ambulance Service, United Sanitary Section No. 533. Once transferred to the European theater in the winter of 1917, he served as an American attachment under the French 10th Army. He served on the frontlines with the French army until dying of complications from contracting influenza on September 26th, 1918. He is buried at the Old Gray Cemetery, Knoxville, Tennessee.
