Dr. John C. McManus Visits Center for the Study of Tennesseans and War

May 6, 2026

On May 4, 2026, Dr. John C. McManus, currently at Missouri University of Science and Technology, visited the Center for the Study of Tennesseans and War. During his time at the University of Tennessee, Dr. McManus, then a graduate student, worked with Dr. Charles Johnson in the early 1990s, interviewing World War II veterans. Many of these interviews can be found on our YouTube channel. The visit was both reminiscent and fun as Dr. McManus told stories of the early days of the Center, Dr. Charles Johnson, and friend of the Center, Edgar Wilson.

Declared a “Top Young Historian” by History News Network in 2007, McManus is an internationally recognized authority on U.S. military history, and the author of 15 books. His latest, To the End of the Earth: The US and the Downfall of Japan, 1945, is the final volume of his trilogy on the US Army in the Pacific War. For more information, visit his website here.
