William Blount was from Bertie County, North Carolina. He participated as a soldier with the continental troops in the American Revolution and later served as a North Carolina representative and signee of the US Constitution during the Constitutional Convention. He became extremely wealth through land speculation during the settlement of Tennessee at the end of the 1700s.
