John Henry Lassiter (Dec. 16, 1914 – Sept. 17, 1943) was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1939 with a degree in engineering. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and was placed as a lieutenant in the role of an engineering officer aboard submarines operating in the Pacific. He was assigned to the USS Pampano in 1943, a submarine often tasked with patrolling near the Japanese mainland. On a mission in September 1943, the USS Pampano failed to report back from one of its patrols. It, along with all of its crew members, was lost and remained unfound off the coast of Honshu, Japan. It is estimated that the USS Pampano was most likely lost around September 17th from either hitting a Japanese underwater mine or from suffering a catastrophic operational failure. Lassiter is memorialized on the Honolulu Pacific Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii.
