Walter Welch Gentry (April 14, 1922 – Feb. 2, 1945) was born in Kingsport, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee for Engineering from 1939 to 1942 and then graduated from the University of Michigan and its ROTC program. He enlisted in the United States Army immediately after graduating in 1943 and was trained as a combat engineer and officer at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. 1stLt. Gentry served in command of C Company of the 290th Engineer Combat Battalion attached to the 7th Army. He was deployed to Europe during the war. First reported missing, he was later confirmed killed in action on February 2, 1945, while fighting in France. Walter W. Gentry is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee, and many of his personal artifacts from his wartime service are located in the Walter W. Gentry Collection at the Betsey B. Creekmore Special Collections at the University of Tennessee.
