David Nolen Gentry (July 4, 1922 – April 29, 1944) was born in Franklin, Tennessee. He was a graduate and football player for Franklin High School before attending the University of Tennessee’s Junior College at Martin from 1941 to 1942. Gentry enlisted in the United States Army in October 1942 and trained at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, as a sergeant. Sgt. Gentry was deployed to Europe in December 1943 as part of the 85th Infantry Division’s 85th Signal Corps. He participated in the North African and Italian campaigns. He was killed in action on April 29, 1943, at Minturno, Italy, in the Lazio region, when his tent was struck by a German artillery shell. He is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Franklin, Tennessee.
